Not only did we hear about the Governor's Fishing Opener 2001 from the local coordinator Dan Gottsch, but we also had a special visit from Carol Peterman from the Minnesota Office of Tourism.
Both of them made us very proud to be from the Brainerd Lakes Area. Dan is a native of Brainerd who is a Crow Wing County Deputy Sheriff. His special qualifications for
his job include graduating from the FBI Academy with the very special 171st class. Carol has 29 counties she covers as the North Central West Manager of the Office of Tourism. She covers 29 counties and works with local chambers. She has been involved in the Opener for 7 years and the Coordinator for 5. She has participated in places such as Bemidji,
Fergus Falls, Red Wing, Grand Rapids Crane Lake and now the Pequot area. She explained that the communities submit a commitment bid and our governor who currently is very interested in tourism, selects the site. She also explains that this project gives her an opportunity to work closely with a community and really get to know people, her favorite part of the job.
Dan wore his uniform to make sure that certain unnamed hecklers (actually he came right out and said Reed Campbell) wouldnąt throw tomatoes at him. He feels his past experience with two other openers gives him the knowledge to make this the best one yet. He explained the purpose of the opener was
"to use the governor to shine and show what a community has to offer". His wife is co-coordinator of the event which will have a budget anywhere from
$160,000 - $200,000 with a commitment to spent any leftover funds promoting tourism. He made all of us Sertomans proud when he talked about what a great guy Jon
Haapajoki was to work with 8 years ago, "The guy who would kick the hurdles down and charge through". He encouraged us to become a volunteer (there were 400 in 93) and told us to call him or his wife at 568-8036 or Doreen Galloway at 562-7811.

Sertoman of the Day

Dave's hilarious presentation of his life included such comments as being presently unmarried (not between marriages), his occupation of
"Wine Dude at Esser's", and a lengthy but funny description of his most embarrassing moment that included a newsletter and a map of Missouri-see Dave for details. Dave attended St. Cloud State and the University of South Dakota with degrees in Mass Communications. He has lived in many areas including Phoenix, Omaha and Portland. His mom lives in town, his brother is an attorney in Minneapolis, and he wants to spend more time with his sister who has a beach house in Oregon. He bikes, does Nautilus workouts and of course tastes wine. His sponsor in Sertoma was Mike Boen This could have something to do with his radio announcing.
