Sertomans raise about $20 million dollars annually to donate to community sponsorships. Our club has been working extremely hard to promote Camp Sertoma for the deaf and hard of hearing. Today we were privileged to hear an immediate report of our Sertoma dollars at work from Sara Stromstad, a counselor at this year's camp. With words such as
"wonderful summer", "I canšt even tell you," and
"more than I would have hoped for or imagined" she told us about a learning and growing year at Camp Sertoma. It expanded from one test week last summer to 6 weeks and 65 total campers from the ages of 5-14. The worthwhile part of the whole experience was giving some small town children a chance for peer interaction. Some of them have never had an opportunity to be in a place where according to Sara
"Kids can be themselves and not worry about being different." One teenage boy who had been to other camps this summer said,
"Here I can communicate and it's just normal," with the emphasis on the word normal. Our Sertoma club sponsored 5 Brainerd area campers. The goal next summer is to serve more campers and perhaps expand the number of weeks.
Jeff Olson did speak after questions about expansion to explain that they have not ruled out the possibility of having one big camp week for all of the various ages. The challenge for any expansion plans is finding more staff. The other factor will be to change the policy so that the $300 cannot be paid by total sponsorships--just paying a small amount will keep them from losing camper spots to
"no-shows". Sara will be student teaching this fall but she fully intends to return to Camp Sertoma next year.

Sertoman of the Day
|
|
|
This is not Dave Clausen, our Sertoman of the Day. Unfortunately he was such an entertaining speaker without notes that the photographer/ notetaker neglected to snap one. If you can guess the mystery person in this photo, let us know. Dave is a investment advisor for Dain Rausch who moved to this area about 2 years ago from Thief River Falls. He's not married and he said," I just don't get it; it scares
me." He is, however, dating a nice girl named Andrea. He likes snowmobiles, four-wheelers and running (participating in several organized races every year). Dale Bolt was his sponsor. When pressed to explain his most embarrassing moment, Dave said,
"I have never embarrassed myself," but he went on to clarify that he has had some terrible moments at golf and is presently looking for a new team that won't make such fun of his terrible slice.

Those of us at the head table thought George Moore was trying to start a Roy Miller look-a-like contest. A pretty good match if George would make a quick visit to a good barber.
Mike Howard was very disappointed in the people who did not show up for the last Pipe and Drape. Both he and Milo stressed the need to sign up and show up. Milo said,
"Mike has done a great job this year and this has been a record year for making money, please help him out."
