Program

Tami Lueck, Executive Director from the Bridges of Hope was today's speaker. Bridges is a faith based 501C that was established to partner church resources with community organizations. They served 1400 households and over 2,000 children last year. They attempt to reach families and provide help before they fall into total crises that oftentimes results in domestic violence, child abuse, and loss of job and income. Some of their programs include Crisis Nursery, Financial Resources, Mental Health Programs and Parent Support Outreach. Tami encouraged us to become involved by continuing our financial support as a group, including more individual contributions if possible, and continuing to recommend the service to those in need. Tami herself has 15 years of experience dealing with families in crisis and is very positive about the overwhelming need for these services in the area. She would also like to encourage you to attend their fundraiser event at Prairie Bay in September. Bridges is developing a new program called Circles of Support that is nationally recognized.

Thanks Pam Sachs for taking notes!

Sertoman of the Day

Luke Schumer was a very good sport about standing up and filling in for his wife who had actually volunteered to be Sertoman of the Day. Luke and Rachel do not have any children, but they have a new dog and a new house. Luke is a farm boy from St. Stephens who's claim to fame was being part of the 2003 National Champion St. Johns Football team. He did have ambitions to be a college football coach, but then moved into the financial world by joining Ameriprise Financial in the Twin Cities. He took the first opportunity to move outstate and came to Brainerd in 2007. His office is in Baxter and consists of him, a partner, and three employees. Luke's hobbies of course include being a sports fanatic but he is also a volunteering fanatic. He joined Sertoma to exercise that skill and meet people in the area. His sponsor was Paul Keprios. His most embarrassing moment involved a stranded pontoon, swimming naked, and motion lights!!

Of Note
Welcome back Les Franz, we have certainly missed you. Les is scheduled for his knee operation August 29th. He brought Lucy with him and took the opportunity to express his gratitude for all the support from the Club. Karla Nelson also returned today. Congratulations Carole Paulsen, another new grandbaby and another boy. Thank you's were presented from Youth as Resources for help with Battle of the Bands and from the Baxter Police Department for our contribution to the police dog fund.

Jenny Vesel received her plaque today for achieving her GEM Award. This is given to rookies who complete a major course of activities to qualify to be Good Enthusiastic Members! Congratulations Jenny

Rumor Corner
  • Brian Skogen goes to Cashways but does not come to Sertoma meetings. Tami Webb has been too busy for our meeting also--come back come back!
  • Thanks to our "assistant" greeters today--can you pick out the real greeter?
  • Bonnie Franke is just getting started learning her new job but she is very enthusiastic about it.
  • Ditto Raboin was trying to be nice but ended up getting lumped into the retired broadcaster's camp.
  • Buffalo Bob Ehrich survived his birthday and is hard at work getting the fun ready for Friday night.
  • Sheriff Dahl was too busy "playing on his onboard computer in the squad car" to deal with Jim Grant's confessions of the clipboard thief. Pam told him his community service with the SafeEars program at BIR took care of the problem. Thanks to all who helped. Update next meeting when Anna Gorecky brings in the money (we hope).
  • Sir Charles Bartels was back in fine form today. However enquiring minds want to know where in the heck Uncle Art has been--not like him to skip Sertoma and the Monday out to lunch bunch.
  • Greg Straka was alternately described as "shy" and "scared" but actually he was just unprepared for his inaugural trip to the mike as a Sergeant. Big Mike forgot to make sure someone was here last week so they all got voted on to pay a $2 fine. Dave Clausen got fined by his buddy Straka for not being willing to acknowledge that he spent some time on the weekend with the Cootie Guy.
  • Pam and Mary wanted to know where their Sergeant pins went?
  • Kathy Williams is going to have to double the cost of that last windshirt to come out on all the fines she has gotten simply for trying to take care of the darn sales.
