Program
Convention, convention, convention. Great in 08 is actually next week and everyone is feeling the pressure. Many thanks to the committee members who have been working hard to see that Brainerd maintains its reputation as the Great Plains Convention hotspot! All the hard work that Rory Coit, Joe Schulte, and a cast of thousands has accomplished so far seems to indicate that this will definitely be a fun-filled and worthwhile event to attend.

Rory Coit presented information on the Sertoma Foundation today. Kathy Williams gave him a little assistance by sharing her experiences with Sai Gau who was a personal friend of hers. The Jon Haappajoki Fund and the Sy Gow Fund are both part of the Sertoma Foundation. Kathy remarked, "Sy Gau was a great supporter of the Sertoma International Foundation. He compared Sertoma to the human body and went on to say that the Foundation is the heart." Kathy went on to remind us along with Rory that the Foundation is the charity of Sertoma. Rory then went into detail about the function of that group. He explained that the Foundation is undergoing a merger so that all branches of the Great Plains Region will be under only one Board of Trustees. Great Plains is working with the IRS in this effort. All Brainerd Noon Sertomans are already contributors to the Foundation since our club does pay a percentage of International dues that go to the Foundation. Individuals and businesses are encouraged to contribute.

The goal for the Convention is to boost the number of Fellows (individuals who have contributed $100 or more). The money has four major uses: support member services such as trainers, contribute matching grants, provide scholarships to those who are entering fields related to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and provide scholarships for students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. If you were not at Sertoma today look for the booth with the brochure pictured. The International Foundation Event is scheduled for Thursday evening at 8 p.m. The Great Plains Region continues to hold the honor of being the highest contributor to the fund. Last year they were number one and this year they are currently leading the contributions.

It is your job to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you can't be there.

Of Note
If you missed Sertoma today, you missed the classic all-time best Ole and Lena joke in the world. Thanks Pam Sachs for being willing to be "naked" in front of Sertoma in the interest of humor and a tribute to the Swinging Sertomans.

Congratulations to Laura Beilke who received her Centurion Award today, and to Mary Marana who achieved the rank of Tribune. They are pictured with Bonnie Cumberland who is the chairperson of the awards committee. We are looking forward to meeting the three winners of the $500 scholarships which will be awarded in May to high school seniors. Thanks Joyce Anderson for the loan of the camera.

Welcome aboard our new Gossamer Ceiling Chairperson Jenny Vesel. She will be in charge of this weekends set up and take down at the Armory. The good news is the ceiling survived the Prom!!!!

Business Notes
Did you know that Jackie McCall at Midwest Family Eye gives an ten percent discount on most purchases excluding eye exams to fellow Sertoma members?

Now is the time to change your dues structure. Call Darren Larson at 833-8507 if you would prefer to be on the yearly rather than quarterly plan.

Mike Boen and Bl Broadcasting stepped up to the plate again today. He contributed $100 to the Foundation at today's meeting to help Rory get the ball rolling!!

Got a great item you would like to get some publicity for? Donate one to the Camp Confidence Classic Auction and raise money for program.

Rumor Corner
  • Tom Krekow has joined Pam Sachs' senior moments club--he took the cameras for prom and forgot to bring them back. Fortunately Joyce Anderson had her digital so we have a picture of our award winners.
  • Charlie Bartels is the go-to guy who is helping to organize the Sertoma Mariucci Fiesta. That is going to cut into his "senior living".
  • Jeff Olson got to collect fines today simply because he is Jeff Olson!!
  • Kari Barnes has a first place high jumper in her family. She is very excited and paid a happy fine to be a "jumping" Mom!
  • Gosh the room seemed a little empty today--everybody must have been home sandbagging their houses since the Brainerd Area is in a flood watch????
  • Mary Marana has been promoted from Sergeant to Flag Captain Marvel or at least she thinks so. She said Shazam and her flag receptacles have all been checked and fixed. (Shazam was Captain Marvel's transforming word--he turned from a meek mild mannered guy into a superhero for those of you too young to remember.)
  • The saga of male bonding continues--hugs were shared and paid for today by our Prez and Brian Kirkpatrick.
  • Dick Stoltman paid for Sergeant abuse today and was joined by his "hitman" Bill Goers. Rumor has it Dick paid Bill to run over Sergeant Pam because he was tired of paying fines.
  • And finally Veronica Jensen thought she was not going to see her thirtieth birthday bash in the news, however this picture is too good not to share.
