Program
Our two visitors today brought home to Sertomans the impact of technology on an area very near and dear to Sertoman hearts--classroom amplification. Pam Dyson from District 181 and Ron R Engstrom from LightSpeed gave us an excellent idea of the advances that have been made in this crucial program. The focus is no longer on individual students who have hearing problems. The Brainerd program has begun to focus on portable units that follow the students with problems. This is especially important in areas like the media center and the computer lab. Mr. Engstrom's video and actual demonstration of the device convinced many of the audience of the advantage of the new technology which benefits everyone in the room. Laser light projects a normal sounding voice (wireless infra-red technology) throughout the room with the aid of speakers. The benefits are tremendous for all students who show increases in achievement scores, reading, and literacy. The teacher benefits because there is much less stress on their voices as well as much less need for redirection for individual students. Mr. Engstrom explained that his company has long been associated with Sertoma and its work in classrooms. The future classrooms will all be equipped with these advanced amplification devices and when they are combined with interactive white boards will allow both students and teachers to be heard and understood by everyone. Two facts make classroom amplification for all important. Children hear differently from adults and because of their limited vocabularies, they need absolute clarity. Also, our classrooms have become increasingly noisy places due to things like computers, printers etc. Thanks Pam Dyson for sharing with us how we are helping in the classroom.
Thanks Ron Morris for taking notes.
Announcements
Everyone is still working hard on the Pipe and Drape committee. All of the helpers for the C & I show were thanked. Everyone who has been working on shaping up the equipment was thanked. Special accolades went to Scott Fisher and most of all to Kari Barnes who today introduced herself and left off the family business and just said Pipe and Drape. This is a huge responsibility and we need to give her all the support and help she needs. Good news is the re-association with Cragun's that has already resulted in a show.
April President Mau has extended the bring a guest to Sertoma month to April. We had four potential new members today--the more the merrier.
Thanks to the Vacationland clean-up crew. Our prayers are with Donna, Dave and the family. Dave is currently at home.
The Jail Lock-Up for the male Sertomans has been canceled. The women will be helping out the 26th, but the men didn't decide to participate.
Roses, Roses, Roses for April 25th-Administrative Professionals Day Mike Boen and the Northern Lakes Sertoma Club are again raising money for their programs through the sale of flowers for what used to be termed "Secretary's Day" If you would like to order a bouquet of 6 roses for $12 to be delivered on the appropriate day, contact Mike either by email or phone. Mike's email address is biggermike@brainerd.net.
Get your Classic Booster Tickets from your local Sertoma ladies who are in competition with the Twin Cities crew to sell the most before June 15th and 16th when the golf and fishing events are scheduled It's not too early to mark your calendar for the Mariucci Fiesta on June 15th.
May 3-5Great Plains Regional Convention in St. Cloud. Make plans to attend--we will have a hospitality booth encouraging people to attend our convention the next year.
The dates have been announced for Camp Sertoma. Our group was instrumental in the founding of Camp Sertoma for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children held each year at Confidence Learning Center. This year again will see two sessions with the younger students attending July 8-13th and the older students the 15th-20th. If you can spare some time to volunteer, plan on joining the kitchen crew.

Sertoman of the Day
David Allen Pundt who is currently a rookie but has belonged to Sertoma before was today,S Sertoman of the Day. His jokes were definitely not going over too well. His elaborate explanation of being embarrassed about working out (his most embarrassing moment) was not exactly funny until Anita Traveca from the YMCA remarked, "I have seen you work out at the Y and you should be embarrassed!" David is married to Carol Anne. He has been in the announcing field off and on for 26 years. He is currently News Director at KLKS, the only singly-owned radio station in the area. He calls himself the oldest rookie in the club. Dave also talked about his acting career which has been a passion since he moved back to Brainerd for the second time. His hobbies include reading, writing, and biking. His current sponsor is John Raboin and he was very active on the committee that produced the Putting on the Ritz party.
Of Note
We continue to pray for the Burggraff family and for a complete recovery for Dave.
Rumor Corner
  • Mike Boen is not only selling flowers but he is picking on short people at Pipe and Drape--shame on you (from someone who is short).
  • Aaron Meister paid a fine for going to the takedown rather than the setup for Pipe and Drape because he figured there was more beer on Monday!!
  • Art Becker got kudos for being the official unofficial greeter today. We do appreciate the fact that he turned down the job at Walmart just so he could continue in this capacity.
  • Dale Bolt also got in trouble at Pipe and Drape, some sexists remarks got him in a little hot water.
  • Kristine Hoheisel didn't get an award for the hotel industry--Nancy Hallam did. Guess who got fined?
  • David Allen Pundt's jokes flew over everyone's head today--even Lori Ukkelberg who admitted to laughing at him years ago when he was first on the radio.
  • Welcome back Erica Eigner and Jerry Keimig.
  • A certain unnamed clown interrupted our actor/announcer to explain to everyone that his hobbies related to whichever woman he was married to at the time--Dave did have a bit of a foot in mouth problem when was discussing how many years he had been married.
