Many
of us were confused during today's program, but some of the
confusion was part of a skit organized by our speaker, Rich
Andrese who is with the Brainerd Lakes Area Chapter of NAMI. NAMI
is the nation's leading grassroots advocacy organization solely
dedicated to improving the lives of families and persons with
severe mental illness such as schizophrenia. Our three
"schizophrenics" were played by a very good looking trio--Pam Bye,
Kathy Williamson and Mary Marana. Rich staged a demonstration with
the help of six other volunteers that gave the audience some idea
of what is like to try and work when you are suffering from a
mental disorder. Thanks to all the brave volunteers who helped
Rich out. NAMI provides many support and education opportunities
in the Brainerd Lakes Area.
Monthly
support and educational group meetings are held on the second
Thursday of every month from 7:00-9:00 at 606 Front Street. They
also offer a free 12 week course once a year designed for
relatives of persons with severe mental illness. He also discussed
the Visions for Tomorrow group that works with families of
children affected with mental illness. He encouraged us to support
Governor Pawlenty's push to make mental illness treatment across
the state a coordinated effort. There was some discussion about
the problems arising out of the decision to establish 3 16 bed
group homes to take care of the current population of the Brainerd
State Hospital. Rich's main goal was to get the membership to be
more cognizant of the fact that mental illnesses are biological
brain disorders, are usually not curable and often times are not
responsive to medication. |

Mike Howard is still looking for Flag Captains and
supporters who are willing to sponsor a flag for public
places. Contact either Mike or Beth Burnard if you are
interested in helping. |
| Sign up with Big Steve Mau to become a card
carrying member of the Sertoma Scale Busters. This
large group intends to weigh in at the Crow Wing Recycling
Center on Tuesday, April 18th, and then become smaller (in
girth anyway) and win the Biggest Loser contest sponsored by
the United Way. |
| Thanks to all who made the busy pipe
and drape season a success from chairman Julia Sullivan. A big
thank you to Julia for handling all the headaches. We have a
few smaller events coming up, but the big push is over. Steve
Augustinack also thanked everyone who helped put up the
gossamer ceiling for the first time at the high school for the
prom. It was a huge success and added a lot of atmosphere to
that gala event. |
| April 27-29 - Great Plains
Regional Convention in Dubuque, Iowa. Learn more about what is
happening in Sertoma by attending meetings and make some great
new friends with all the fun activities. Sign up at the
meeting or see Kari Robinson. On the home front the Board
voted to include the dues raise to finance the 2008 Convention
in Brainerd. The next nine quarters will see $10 added on to
everyone's dues. This surcharge is non-refundable and will be
used to cover expenses as they arise. Brainerd Noon Sertoma
members are all registered to attend the convention and
prepaid through this charge. |
| Fun things to do in Dubuque: bus trip to
Field of Dreams, trip to arboretum and botanical gardens,
scenic cruise on the Mississippi, shopping at Cable Car Square
at Galena and great breakout sessions at the convention. These
include training in wine-tasting fundraising, legal aspects of Sertoma and working on membership personal enhancement. |
| April 29-30 - Contact Dave Clausen if you are interested in
working at a benefit basketball tournament at Forest View. They need 3 shifts of 3-4 people on
Saturday and 2 shifts on Sunday. Proceeds will go towards the
$500 scholarships awarded in the name of Jeff Oliphant. |

| Greeter
Schedule |
|
| Remember:
As greeter you have several duties. You need to arrive about 10
minutes early. It is your job to greet people, help them find
their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish to participate.
The money collected must be divided by the Greeters equally--half
goes to the Current Club Treasurer for the social committee and
half goes to the Club President along with the bucket of tickets.
Be there by 11:45 and call somebody to substitute for you if you
can't be there. |

| Sertoman of the Day |
The
mellifluous Jim O'Rourke stood up in front of the group today and
talked about his many activities. He and his wife Stacey have 5
children and 4 grandchildren with one more on the way. Two of his
girls are getting married soon and he is also building a new house
so his life is very hectic. He started a new business recently
called Reliable Appraisals of Central Minnesota with his offices
located in NIsswa. He has been on his own for 6 months, but he
spent some time with a Twin Cities Company before that. He has
some experience in local radio and still works with the In
Fisherman crowd. He took the opportunity to encourage us to
recognize the fact that Brainerd is getting international
recognition through the efforts of In Fisherman. He talked about
the Professional Walleye Tournament which has several local
entries vieing for the national title including Richie Boggs, Gary
Roach, Cobi Hood and Perry Good. The tournament pays out 2 million
dollars and is broadcast on the Outdoor Channel with two events in
Minnesota this year. June 13-15th they will be at Ottertail for
the first time and then August 9-11 at Lake Mille Lacs. Spectators
are encouraged so put one of these events on your calendar. Jim's
nickname for the rumor column is going to have to be Zip It Up
O'Rourke. To find out the details which do involve prominent
members of the clergy, see Jim. He joined the club under the
auspices of Tom Rosenberger and remarked, "I heard it was a great
organization and I truly enjoy being a part of it." |

We received a very special thank you card from Gavin, the little
boy from Staples who received a hearing aide recently with our
help. Congratulations Karen Owen who is turning 55 this week.
Dear Sertomans: Thank you so much for the scholarship award
you've granted me. It is a huge blessing to me and my family. I
will use it wisely to further my education. Shannon Siekas. |

Rumor Corner

- Our speaker was very patient with our rather rowdy group who
wasn't ready to be serious on a fine spring day about a topic
such as mental illness. Kathy, Mary, and Pam got a few catcalls
and suggestions from the audience when they flunked their test
of course. And it was truly obnoxious when politicians got
mentioned but we managed to get through it without embarrassing
ourselves too much--good restraint crew.
- Clausen had his foot in his mouth again today several times.
3 Quickies? Smooth talking kept him out of jail? Polygamy is
back in style?
- We want to know who ordered the roses for the wife, the
girlfriend and the administrative assistant? Inquiring minds
want to know Mike Boen.
- Welcome back Kristine Hoheisel (it was also announced that
her lovely daughter is expecting a sibling sometime in the
future).
- Cub Foods was the site the of the $500 shopping spree--Steve
Mau says their is a fifty cent shopping spree every day at
Brainerd General Rental.
- Pam announced that she sent her baby horse to kindergarten
last night. He went off to Nimrod with Pickles Dillman!
- For those of you who are worried about your mental
problems--see Julia or Scott for some "medicine".
