We
have all noticed the big new hotel developments along Highway 371
north and today we had the two business partners, Joel Cairy and
Doug Roude, who are opening up “The Lodge” as our speakers. The
hotel which is located across from Reed’s includes 102 spacious
guestroom suites, 6 themed 2 and 3 bedroom and luxury loft suites,
10,000 square feet of meeting space separate from the water park,
and the 30,000 square foot Paul Bunyan Indoor Water Park. Both
Joel and Doug emphasized the fact that they felt the Brainerd
Lakes Area was the perfect “cool destination” to focus on the new
trend in vacations, more regional trips.
The Water Parks, 25 of which are located in our neighbor to the
East, have gone from 68 in 2003 to 90 in 2004, because of the
increasing number of p eople
who are meeting with their families for vacations. If you would
like more information go to www.mylodge.com. They are also
accepting reservations at 8777-the-lodge. The most impressive
picture the gentlemen showed us with the help of Art Becker was
the lobby which is two and half stories high and is designed to
make you feel like you are in a mountain lodge with its cedar and
stone décor and large dividing fireplace. According to Doug “We
have all the bases covered and many new innovations including
party rooms for the water park, a huge indoor outdoor hot tub, an
acre of outdoor event space, and a futuristic arcade.
The Hotel will be featured in Midwest Living Magazine and next
month Channel 5 on the Road in May. Doug concluded his part of the
speech with a nice compliment for our Sertoma Club, “This is a
great club, the room is full of people, everyone is happy, and
what you are doing represents the best of Brainerd.” The question
and answer period concentrated on the new restaurant which will be
added after the opening. |

| Sertoman of
the Day |
Reverend
Tami Webb was our honored Sertoman today. Tami introduced us to
her significant other, Pete Mogenson, and talked about her two
grown children and 5 grand children. Her hobbies included
volunteering and volleyball. She called herself a “stubborn German
from New Ulm” and we have all witnessed Tami’s tenacity. She got
involved in Sertoma through “Hopper” and joined under the
sponsorship of Lynn Franz. She was a newbie in charge of the
social committee when Brainerd hosted the Regional Convention and
her most embarrassing moment was being called on the carpet by
Hopper for being late to an early morning meeting after manning
the Hospitality Suite. She joined Sertoma because someone finally
asked her and she has served as VP, President, Chairperson of the
Board and now is North Minnesota District Governor. She has a new
job at The Office Shop which has two branches in Aitkin and
Brainerd. They specialize in office supplies, furniture, copiers
and equipment, Unicel, wireless internet access and Radio Shack
products. Her job is outside sales and marketing and she is very
enthusiastic about the company. |

|
Of
Note |
|
|
|
Julia Sullivan was elected our third VP and Darren Larson is our
Treasurer Elect. Congratulations to both. We are still looking for
a Secretary. Beth Burnard and Missy Lake got the most write in
votes. |

Special
Thanks from the Jaycees Dawn Imgrund was a bit nervous since she
didn't realize she was representing her husband and the Jaycees at
such a large gathering but she expressed the heartfelt gratitude
of the Jaycees to all Sertomans for their help with the $150,000
Ice Fishing Extravaganza. She also presented a check to Dave
Burggraph who represented Camp Sertoma for their help with bucket
checking. |

John Raboin and a blonde woman are sitting next to each other on a
long flight from L.A. to New York. John leans over to her and asks
if she would like to play a fun game. The blonde is tired and just
wants to take a nap, so she politely declines and rolls over to
the window to catch a few winks.
John persists, saying that the game is really easy and a lot of
fun. He explains how the game works: "I ask you a question, and if
you don't know the answer, you pay me, and visa-versa." Again, the
blonde politely declines and tries to get some sleep. John figures
that since his opponent is a blonde he will easily win the match,
so he makes another offer. "Okay, how about this, if you don't
know the answer you pay me only $5, but if I don't know the
answer, I will pay you $500." This catches the blonde's attention
and, figuring that there will be no end to this torment unless she
plays, she agrees to play the game.
John asks the first question. "What's the distance from earth
to the moon?" The blonde doesn't say a word, reaches into her
purse, pulls out a five-dollar bill, and hands it to him. Now,
it's the blonde's turn. She asks John, "What goes up a hill with
three legs, and comes down with four?" John looks at her with a
puzzled look. He takes out his laptop computer and searches all
his references. He taps into the Air-phone with his modem and
searches the Net and even the Library of Congress. Frustrated, he
sends E-mails to all his coworkers and friends he knows. All to no
avail. After over an hour of searching for the answer he finally
gives up. He wakes the blonde and hands her $500. The blonde
politely takes the $500 and turns away to get back to sleep.
John, who is more than a little frustrated, wakes the blonde
and asks, "Well, so what goes up a hill with three legs and comes
down with four?" Again without a word, the blonde reaches into her
purse, hands the John $5, and goes back to sleep. |
