Kevin
Pelkey from Habitat for Humanity which has been in the Brainerd
Area for fifteen years joined the group today to talk about his
program. Kevin admitted that he was a total construction newbie
when he undertook his job eight years ago (most embarrassing
moment, first day on the job, had to admit he didn’t know what a
footing was).
He talked about house #51 which just closed last week and the
family that was moving in. Kevin remarked, “This is really not
just a house to our clients; it is a castle.” This particular
family saw this modest home as being “huge” and again brought back
to Steve how much of a change it is for the people. “The community
builds this simple, safe and affordable housing with us and for
us,” he continued, “And
they
make the job so much easier by volunteering.”

updates of volunteer jobs please click on the link and email Steve
at hab4hum@huslink.net.
Their new fundraising endeavor which is named The Restore takes
all materials that contractors donate when they do demolition work
and offers them for sale to the public. In a year, this effort has
raised $83,000 for Habitat. Since the average houses they build
cost between $55,000 and $60,000, this is a great way to recycle.
The store is located ½ mile south of the Crow Wing County
Fairgrounds on County Rd 45. |

Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties that include meeting
people at the door and getting the ticket money counted and
divided with half going to Tami to give away and half to Diane for
the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several
duties. You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job
to greet people, help them find their badges and sell them a
ticket if they wish to participate. The money collected must be
divided by the Greeters equally--half goes to the Current Club
Treasurer and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there by 11:45 and call somebody if you
can't. Call Patty Hartman. |

| Sertoman of
the Day |
Erica
Eigner of Tradition Mortgage was today’s honored Sertoman. She
began by explaining to Pam that she didn’t write down any of the
information on the top of the page because she knew who she was
married to and what her children’s names were. After that chuckle
she went on to explain how her and her husband Ty have alternated
being active members of Sertoma because of the responsibility of
raising a family. They now have two children.Erica is from
Apple Valley and she met Ty there and they had actually purchased
a house and settled down in that area before she transferred to
Brainerd to start a branch office for her company. About 50 people
work at Tradition Mortgage state wide where arrange financing for
developments, golf courses, and homes and businesses as well as
provide financial services. She is a Mortgage advisor and has been
in the Brainerd area for 6 years.
She joined Sertoma because relationships and giving are both
important personal and professional values for her. Her sponsor
was Brian Kirkpatrick. She is one of those busy people who
considers her family a worthwhile “hobby” activity, but she also
likes to run. See Sandra Bonde if you would like to be Sertoman of
the Day. |
