The very amusing and photogenic Tony Sailer in his capacity as
Recreation Specialist for the Brainerd Parks and Recreation
Department was today’s guest speaker. He began his speech with
an entertaining joke, a zinger for Jim Potvin, went on to harass
Roy Miller, and then got down to the main focus of his
speech-new happenings at Park and Rec. This is the busiest time
of year in his department. The total number of adults and kids
who participate in summer programs is well over 1,000 each. Tony
commented, “The fun thing about my job is that people come in
happy, especially the parents.” One happy program he encourages
everyone to visit is the Little Buckaroos program. This gets
parents and pre-schoolers out on the field to try hitting and
fielding balls. Tony says the kids are mostly batting helmets
and legs and everybody on the bench is liable to get up and
charge on the field after the ball. |

|
|
In spite of being in the midst of a second year of $120,000
budget cuts with 2/3 of summer staff among the missing, they are
trying to continue to offer quality programs especially for
kids. Volunteers are need on the athletic fields, in the office,
at the Civic Center, in the parks in the programs and for
special events. If you would like to volunteer call 828-2320 or
email
staff@brainerdparks.com. One very busy location is the
Frisbee Golf course that will be the site of the Professional
Disc Golf Tournament on September 25th. This popular area has a
guest book that has been signed by world-wide participants. A
new skate board facility is currently in the works. Because
Jaycees Park already has the cement platform, the KaBoom Company
has given a $75,000 grant to make the park a state of the art
facility. |
|
|
July 22, one hundred volunteers will complete the work in one
day. This will be at no cost to taxpayers since the kids
involved are raising $15,000 matching funds to finish the
project. Some future ideas include a yearly marathon race and
possibly the return of the Mighty Gulls in 2005. General on
going projects include cleaning up the Civic Center, more lights
for the adult soft ball fields, raising $27,000 to install the
pitching machine donated by Paul Bunyan Amusement Center, and
work on the concession stands and dugouts at most fields. One of
their fund raisers aimed at supporting the kids programs is the
t-shirt sale. Look for the distinctive Paul Bunyan logo and buy
a shirt to support Parks and Rec kids. |

You need to arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to

Sertoman of the Day
|
Kudos to Loren Kmet of Avada Audiology and Hearing Care who
began his speech as Sertoman of the Day by remarking, “I’d
rather die than stand up here.” Loren did a great job of sharing
his information with us. Avada is located in the old Goedker
Building so it is no wonder that Kevin was Loren’s sponsor when
he joined Sertoma 9 months ago. His company is in 17 states
including Minnesota and they test hearing as well as providing
solutions and education. He has been with the company a year.
Loren and his wife Melissa have a boy and girl. His hobbies
include hockey since his son is already involved with the
program. Loren was in the Navy for 10 years. His most
embarrassing moment involved a blind date and an accidental dose
of auto air freshener instead of mouth freshener. Sandra Bonde
thanks Loren for sharing and wants you to say yes when she asks
you! |

We have several newly inducted members but we will present you
with the complete list of names and all the new faces next week.
If Rhonda Mareck and Todd Dunlap are reading this carefully, they
can collect their sawbuck this week. |

Rumors Corner: |
- Guess who decided spring called for an ice cream cone. Hint
his new nickname is media Czar.
- Acting Sergeant Lynn Franz is sprouting wings? Maybe she
wasn’t fibbing about Rick Fargo punching her in the face.
- Biddy Joe Schulte?
- Wilfred Brumley has 400 Sertoma pins at home but refuses to
wear one.
- Julia Sullivan is now Bonnie Cumberland’s Agent. She refuses
to be in charge of her wardrobe however.
- Mike Boen’s quote of the day, “All Brainerd radio stations
will continue to have an afternoon edition.” Stay tuned for Roy
Miller’s witty reply next week.

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the
newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from
reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS
followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just
leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to
collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never
respond.
