Jeff Olson, Executive Director of Confidence
Learning Center, began his annual presentation for
those who are new members or ones that haven't yet
gotten involved in the Sertoma Mariucci Fiesta which
is held in conjunction with Camp's annual fund
raiser. The answer is centered around the 40 years
that Confidence Learning Center has been providing
outdoor education for people with developmental
disabilities. The legendary Jon Haappajoki "We work
hard and play harder" philosophy is definitely
epitomized by the Sertoma Mariucci Fiesta. The
contribution from the Jaycees $150,000 Ice Fishing
Contest is huge but Camp itself usually has to raise
around $400,000 for program. The Fiesta serves
800-1000 people and helps to raise about $70,000 for
Camp. It brings the participants in the Classic Golf
and Fishing events as well as friends of Camp into
the Confidence Learning Center environment and
inspires people to give their support. In l978 Jeff
met his first Sertomans at the Fiesta when he became
a dishwasher on his very first visit to Camp. That
experience made him apply for his first job at
Confidence. The importance of the Fiesta is not only
the money raising but the publicity and camaraderie.
Brainerd is blest with the best volunteers in the
state and Jeff would even claim the country. The
Vice Presidents will be contacting individuals to
volunteer for areas--Mary Marana, LoAnn Reponen, and
Bill Goers. "It's about Sertoma and raising money
for the Camp and we should all be proud to be a part
of this," remarked Jeff. Everyone who is in Sertoma
can come early to help or later to enjoy, but don't
miss this terrific event. After Jeff tried to name
all the people who help out every year, Charlie
Bartels was going to have a egg throwing fund raiser
(Jeff was the target of course) but Bonanza had a
few qualms about slimy eggs. Cathe brought in the
Booster Ticket Quilt. If you would like to buy a
ticket or even sell some for Camp, contact her. Jeff
ended by thanking Cub Foods for their help with the
food, a tremendous time and money saving donation. |
