Kathy
Galalswyk represented the Initiative Foundation at Sertoma
today. This was established in 1986 by the McKnight Foundation
and its mission is to unlock the potential of the people of
Central Minnesota to build and sustain healthy communities. They
impact areas such as gap-lending for new and expanding
businesses, grants for community and economic development, and
leadership training, Crow Wing County alone has received 231
grants totaling about a million and a half dollars. Kathy wanted
to present the group's key focus for 2003 through 2007. Their
number one priority is to strengthen children youth and families
and are concentrating on their program which they call Ready 4K.
They will be granting six million dollars in three years for
this important endeavor. Kathy remarked, Every dollar
invested in pre-school returns numerous rewards. The program
wants to change the fact that one-half the kids in Minnesota
enter kindergarten unprepared. Kathy was a very entertaining
speaker. Her background is local-she and her husband Neil are
farmers in Pillager. She recounted her first day on the job when
life seemed to be a total disaster--broken water heater, stolen
car, dog hit by semi, and a mistaken $1,000 overdraft notice
from the bank. She was quick to mention it was not a Brainerd
bank. She also related her husband's opening remark about the
car, Why did you park there? She did go on to say that she feels
her job is very worthwhile and encouraged us to find out more
about the programs by going to
www.ifound.org. |

Remember: Greeters (Be sure to take care of your duties
that include meeting people at the door and getting the ticket
money counted and divided with half going to Tami to give away
and half to Diane for the social committee's budget). As greeter you have several duties. You need to
arrive about 10 minutes early. It is your job to greet people,
help them find their badges and sell them a ticket if they wish
to participate. The money collected must be divided by the
Greeters equally--half goes to the Club Treasurer (Diane Rook
Johnson) and half goes to the Club President along with the
bucket of tickets. Be there
by 11:45 and call somebody if you can't. Call Jeff Birks @
820-5544 if you can't make it.

Pipe and Drape Editorial by Pam Sachs |
|
Mike Howard and Julia Sullivan are my heroes. I have helped out at
some smaller pipe and drape occasions at places such as Maddens,
Rohlfings, and Breezy Point, but have never done one of the big
shows. When Karla Nelson and I walked into the commerce and
industry show and looked at the miles of blue drape, I thought to
myself, We will be here until midnight. Although we could
certainly have used more help, we did manage to get done by 6:30.
I haven't folded that much since I worked in the laundry when I
was in college. I just kept thinking, Fifty dollars an hour per
person and kept taking down pipes and later folding drapes. It was
great to see people bringing their kids, their wives, and the next
door neighbor to help. If you would like to see what it is all
about click on the link
for some great PIPE and DRAPE PHOTOS. |

The FAS Program was designed to encourage people to read the newsletter. Even those who attend the meeting can benefit from reviewing the announcements etc. If you find the letters FAS followed by your name, you must call the number provided and just leave a message that you called and attend the next meeting to collect your money. Simple--however 90% of the people never respond.
