Nancy Cross and Becky Miehlke were today's joint speakers who came to invite us to participate in the first Deaf Awareness Days 2001 which will be held Friday and Saturday April 17th-28th. Nancy explained the program which will include as many elementary and
HS students as possible attending the Expo on Friday focused on raising awareness of issues related to deafness. This Expo is also open to the public and will include such interesting things as children's stories, hearing dog demonstrations and many more. Teachers and other community and business professionals will have an opportunity to earn continuing education credits by attending the Saturday morning workshop. The culmination of the activities is an entertainment provided by Magic Matt Morgan. Since his programs are aimed at the deaf, there will be interpreters available and the hearing and deaf communities will have a unique opportunity to share fellowship and interact. This performance will cost $3. Nancy was overjoyed when her appeal for funds to finance tickets for elementary students was answered immediately with with sponsorship of 100 tickets. FAS 829-7761 Kevin Wroolie Becky presented information on the CLC club which is called PAH. Their mission is to support the deaf community by promoting awareness and interaction. Becky was proud to inform us that her goal is to be an interpreter for the state of Minnesota.

Sertoman of the Day
|
|
|
|
Happy Anniversary to our Sertoman of the Day, Melody Banks. She began her impromptu speech (she was filling in for her boss, Dale Benson who was suppose to be speaking) with the announcement that her and Ron have been married for 25 years.
Melody's current occupation is St. Joseph's Hospital Community Relations Coordinator. Her previous job after they moved here from Ames, Iowa, around 1987 was at the Brainerd Daily Dispatch. She has a degree in commercial art. She has two grown children, a son in St. Paul and a daughter who has given her two wonderful grandchildren. Her Sertoma sponsor was Bonnie Franke and she has been a member since 1994. She has her GEM and Centurion awards, has served as secretary, and was awarded the lifetime membership.
"This club has been a wonderful part of my life," exclaimed Melody,
"and it has shown me what Minnesota nice is all about!"

Dear Fellow Sertomans:
We leave this Thursday a.m. for Haiti. Wish us success in our mission. I wish to thank all of you for your support and your efforts on the shoes for Haiti drive. We met our goal and are now working toward another 300 pair of shoes for another trip. Thanks so much to the Sertoma Club for the beautiful floral
arrangement, cards and prayers.

group we do want to acknowledge the good things that happen to the people in
our club and provide moral support when things are not so sunny. Mary
Marana, as one of the chaplains, has agree to be the coordinator of our
efforts. Her numbers are as follows; 828-4539 or
829-2997. Please contact her if you feel a card or flowers are appropriate. |
