Jan Moran and Gerald Walseth visited Sertoma this week You know those annoying telephone calls you get from people selling things and taking surveys? Jan Moran and Gerald Walseth visited Sertoma this week to ask us to respond to a very important call from Russell and Herder that will be asking the Brainerd Lakes Area for some much needed input on the public's view of the Brainerd School System. They presented the long term plan that currently calls for the Brainerd people to make a decision about "reinvesting in education" by next March. As Superintendent Walseth and Ms. Moran explained, "We are no longer and K-12 system; we must take the early childhood through lifetime view in any plans we make." Although the purchase of land in Baxter has given rise to considerable speculation about "the new high school" to be built there, Mr. Walseth made it very clear that the Board intends to look at all possibilities and this is just one. Factors that will influence their decision include: children's needs are changing as they mature earlier, Brainerd is a growing district in contrast to many which are declining, all students must now stay in school until they are 18, older buildings have many drawbacks (antiquated wiring and heating, poor air quality, little flexibility for handling special needs, and overcrowding), and other issues brought forth by the task force which will soon be created. On a much more positive note, Ms. Moran gave us the happy news that Brainerd ranked in the top 500 schools in a nationwide Times Magazine Survey (actually #345 of 25,000 responders), more of our students take Advanced Placement Tests than any else but one school in Minnesota, and we offer more types of vocational classes than any other school in Minnesota. Both educators stressed the involvement of the school in the extensive and expensive care of special needs students that often starts today at birth and ends at age 21. Mike Boen concluded the program with an invitation to both to return for just a question and answer period sometime during the next stages of this process where many more people will have a chance to ask their questions.

Sertoman of the Day

Kevin GoedkerKevin Goedker is a brand-new member of Sertoma who has already persuaded someone else to join the club. His sponsor was Sandra Ehrich and he would like to be an active member and even a leader in our club. Of course, Kevin comes by his occupation in real estate naturally. He was in the Marines for 5 years and had started his own business in Florida when his mother's health made a move home seem expeditious. His wife Cindie works at Lindy and they have a 3 year old daughter. Kevin loves volunteer work, computers, people and he's trying to love running so he can get back to his Marine Corps fitness. This "Survivor's" ("my team didn't cheat") most embarrassing moment involved the Brainerd Kixters-he was their manager?

Note

Brenda Meech is visiting the Sertoma Club in Houston as part of a business trip and would like ideas of something to take with as a present from the Brainerd Noon Club. She also has tickets for the Baxter PTO Fun Night available for sale.

Pipe and Drape went well this past week and Mike Howard had a big thank you and a no fine award for the people who made all four work sessions. Gear up for the Commerce and Industry show!!!!

Elections are next week.

Kris Kellet reminded us of the sign up for the Lakeland Golf Classic at Cragun's. She encouraged businesses to become corporate sponsors.

Brian Skogen announced that Pat Hasset is not only our Service to Mankind representative but she is also the Regional Award Winner. Congratulations Pat.*

Our international club is 89 years oldToday we celebrated the birthday of Sertoma. Everyone enjoyed the cake which was very beautifully decorated with appropriate symbols. Our international club is 89 years old and our own club has been around for over 20 years. Let's all use this occasion to remember what Sertoma means and why we joined. FAS 829-7761 Pat Kuss. Let's help to make Sertoma's 90th year a glorious one in Brainerd, Minnesota.

A hardy group of Northwoods Sertomans braved the cold on Monday to go out and get their picture taken with the Sertoma sign. Be sure to sign up for the banquet on April 19th.  A hardy group of Northwoods Sertomans braved the cold
Some issues have been raised concerning the Sertoma Sunshine efforts. As a group we do want to acknowledge the good things that happen to the people in our club and provide moral support when things are not so sunny. Mary Marana, as one of the chaplains, has agree to be the coordinator of our efforts. Her numbers are as follows; 828-4539 or 829-2997. Please contact her if you feel a card or flowers are appropriate. Sertoma Sunshine
