"Take me out to the ballgame" was the basic message of today's speaker, Chuck Carstensen, who is the new assistant manager of the Might Gulls baseball team. The Gulls have been in Brainerd for 3 years and plan on staying in the area. They belong to the 8 team summer collegiate Northwoods League. Players who come here are usually top division 1 players who are looking for ways to improve their draft status. This guarantees that the games will be good baseball since many of the players are trying to start their major league careers. They play a 64 games, 32 of which are at home. The team plays almost every day of the 68 day season. Carstensen, a native of Browerville took this job after his recent graduation from St. John's with a major in communication. Last summer he was the play by play and public address person for the Gulls.
To promote their program, the Gulls are offering great deals to area clubs like Sertoma. Group discounts on tickets, picnic groups, and fund raising ticket selling programs were among the things mentioned. He also encouraged us to not only get out to the ballpark but to sign up to be a host family According to Chuck ,
"Baseball is here to stay and going all out to let people know it is good baseball!"

Sertoman of the Day
|
|
|
|
Jim Potvin who is the Chief Financial Officer for Brainerd Medical Center was today's Sertoman of the Day. Jim is also one of our illustrious Sergeants and was brought into the club by John
Nelson. Jim, who described his most embarrassing moment quite well, was given a little bit of a hard time by his fellow Sertomans for not mentioning that he was this year's Rookie of the Year as well as participating in the Heritage Committee.
He and his wife Kim have two daughters Tiffany who is 13 and Nicole who is 12. He did come from a rather large family of 12 and many of his relatives are still current Brainerd residents. Jim's goal is to have a healthy and happy family and to be able to retire comfortably. He enjoys hunting, singing, hiking, biking and camping and is looking forward to attending the Regional Convention in Fort Dodge next week.

Stuck in a rut? Same routine every day? Don't know your neighbor? Feeling out of touch?
"You need to get yourself involved with Sertoma!" says former Sertoma Brainerd Noon Club President Brian Skogen. "Meet 150-plus people for lunch on Wednesday, help clean up ditches by
BIR, cut wood for Camp Confidence, perform hearing screenings at Washington Middle School and Mississippi Horizons School or volunteer to prepare food for the Camp Confidence Mariucci Fiesta.
"Sertoma Works" and Sertomans have more fun! Most Brainerd Sertomans are younger people but there are some "geezers." That includes charter members who started the club way back in 1978. We welcome men, women, young people and geezers too. Check us out by joining us for lunch (Noon Club), breakfast (Sunrise Club), or one of our many social events. For more information call Milo Johnson at 828-8549 or click on our Web site at
www.brainerd.com/sertoma.
