Kathy Buxton was our Speaker today, although she did not spend much time talking she conveyed a very powerful message on behalf of the American Cancer Society. Kathy who is a cancer survivor presented the Relay for Life information that included a terrific video that brought tears to many eyes. It showed the thousands of people who participate in this celebration of life that helps raise millions of dollars for cancer research and local programs. President Milo Johnson pledged a Sertoman Team to participate July 28th- July 29th . Volunteer to join the team or help to sponsor a Sertoman who does and help the Cancer Society reach their goal. One in three people alive today will be diagnosed with cancer and this money is used for cancer research and for local community programs such as "I Can Cope" and "Road to Recovery".

I walked around a track today;
I walked to help a disease go away.
I walked because there is a need:
I walked that bodies could be freed.
I walked to give a small child hope:
I walked to help someone cope.
I walked for a husband or a wife:
I walked to help prolong a life.
I walked with my head held high:
I walked for that one about to die.
I walked excitedly not demure;
I walked for everyone to see:
I walked for you, I walked for me. |

Sertoman of the Day
|
|
|
|
Colleen Smith of Car-Col Sewer Service was our Sertoman of the Day. She was able to combine telling us about her work and her family since she and her husband have many joint ventures including the sewer service. She was born in Staples but grew up in the Brainerd area. Her family business, a campground, eventually became part of Colleen and Corky's varied enterprises.
She has two children--Paul works for Car-Col and Sarah is an elementary school teacher in Motley. Her hobbies include decorating, snowmobiling, and 4-wheeling. Her family retreat is in LA (actually it is the Leader Area known as Wilderness
Park) She was brought into Sertoma in 1998 by Marlys Meyer.

Mayor James E. Wallin Proclaims April 23-29th as Sertoma Week in Brainerd. This is also Sertoma Month nationally celebrating many years of Service to Mankind.
(From Mary at the Chamber) Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything you did not only as Sertomans but as Chamber members and area business people. Your help throughout the years has made the Commerce and Industry show the
success it is today. Move-in has gone smoothly due in big part to you, the Sertomans. You Sertoman's are FAST! A big thank you to Mike Howard and Deb Hodapp.
